The important word is “you.” The puzzle says: “You have 3 cows, 2 dogs, and 1 cat. How many legs do you have?”
That means the question isn’t necessarily asking you to calculate the total number of legs belonging to all six animals. It’s asking how many legs you—the person who owns them—have.
Assuming you’re a typical human with two legs, the intended trick answer is therefore 2 legs, not 24. The animals are mainly there to distract you into doing unnecessary arithmetic.
That’s what makes this little puzzle entertaining. The mathematics is easy, but careful reading is the real challenge. Did you answer 24 on your first try, or did you immediately notice the word “you” and get 2?
